Where your story goes, and how long it stays there.
For an AI to read your story, your story has to reach the AI. Here is every place it travels, what is kept, and for how long, with nothing left out.
the short answer
- Your story is sent once, encrypted, to our servers, and from there to Anthropic’s, where Claude reads it.
- We hold it, encrypted, only while your report is written, then delete it: within 6 hours at most. You can close the page; we’ll email you when your report is ready.
- We never use it to train AI. What Anthropic keeps, and for how long, is set by Anthropic’s own terms.
- What we keep is your report and your questions, so you can come back to them. The report quotes short passages of your story.
the journey
Four stops, start to finish.
your computer
You choose your story.
Your file stays where it is. Your web browser opens it and copies out the text, ready to send.
Kept: your file, as always. It’s yours.
our servers
We hold it while your editor works.
Your text travels encrypted to our servers, where it’s kept encrypted only while your report is written. Your editor works from it there, so you can close the page.
Kept on our servers: an encrypted copy, until your report is done. Six hours at most.
anthropic’s servers
Claude reads it.
Claude, the AI, reads every page and writes your notes.
Kept by Anthropic: as its own terms set out, not as we decide.
back to you
Only the notes return.
Your report comes back and is saved in your account, with your questions and facts about the file: its name, its length, its chapter titles and, for a script, who speaks. The report includes a synopsis and quotes short passages, so you can see what each note is about. The copy we held is deleted, and we email you that your report is ready.
Kept by Evalie: your report and your questions, until you delete the review.
what is kept, and where
Every place, in one table.
| Where | What | For how long |
|---|---|---|
| Your computer | Your original file. | Yours, always. |
| Your web browser | A working copy of the text while your review is open. | Erased when you finish, or after 30 days unused. |
| Evalie’s servers | An encrypted copy of your story, and your editor’s reading notes, while your report is written. | Deleted when your report is done. Six hours at most. |
| Evalie’s database | Your report and questions, your note to the editor, and facts about the file: its name, its length, its chapter titles and, for a script, who speaks. The report includes a synopsis and short quoted passages. Not your story’s full text. | Until you delete the review. |
| Anthropic’s servers | The text of your story, so Claude can read it. | As Anthropic’s terms set out. |
| AI training | We never use your story for it. | Never. |
who can see it
People, machines, and no one else.
- People at Evalie
- No one here reads your story as part of a review. We do hold an encrypted copy, and its key, while your report is written, and then delete both. Your report and questions stay in our database, like everything in your account, and they quote short passages of it.
- Claude, the AI
- Yes. That is the reading. It reads your story to write your notes.
- People at Anthropic
- That is for Anthropic’s own terms to say: they set out when its staff may review what its automatic safety checks flag. More on that below.
- Other AI companies, publishers, anyone else
- No. We never sell your story, share it with anyone but Anthropic, or use it to train anything.
safety checks
Safety checks, and what they mean for you.
Anthropic’s computers automatically check for people trying to misuse AI to cause real harm. What Anthropic keeps of a flagged request, and for how long, is set by its own terms.
As Anthropic describes it, what they look for is narrow: real help with cyberattacks, such as working hacking code, and dangerous biology, such as how to make a disease or a poison. Horror, crime, war, abuse, drugs, adult love scenes and the darkest parts of history are ordinary fiction, and very unlikely to set anything off.
Where it can happen is a thriller that includes real lab steps or working code: a story around it doesn’t make that detail exempt. Now and then, honest work trips a check by mistake. The one thing always refused, however it’s framed, is sexual content involving children.
If it happens before your editor has written anything, you pay nothing. Reading stops straight away. We tell you plainly, and your review is handed back unused: use it on another manuscript, or delete it and the credit comes back. Later on, the rest of your report still stands, and if it’s the editor’s letter, the review starts over at no cost: the terms have the detail.
You can read these rules in Anthropic’s own words.
a few words, explained
If the terms are new to you.
- Server
- A computer in a secure building that does work for websites. Your story visits Anthropic’s servers to be read.
- Database
- A filing cabinet on a server. Ours holds your account and your reports. Your story is kept elsewhere, encrypted, and only while your report is written.
- Encrypted
- Scrambled, so anyone who intercepted it, or found the stored copy without its key, would see nonsense. On the way, it is the padlock beside our web address.
- Training
- How AI companies teach their systems, by feeding them huge amounts of writing. We never use yours for it.
